IEN’s Roundtables bring several scholars together around a shared question or theme. Rather than presenting separate papers, participants engage in conversation, compare perspectives, and explore issues that benefit from collective discussion.
The first roundtable, “Modernity and Tradition in Iranian Music: Historiography, Practice, and Theory,” brought together Solmaz Shakerifard, Mohsen Mohammadi, and Morteza Abedinifard to discuss how ideas of modernity, tradition, innovation, notation, instrumentation, and pedagogy have shaped Iranian music.
Another roundtable, “Fieldwork in Times of Crisis: Rethinking Ethnomusicological Research on Iran,” featured Laudan Nooshin, Kajwan Ziaoddini, Solmaz Shakerifard, Ashkan Nazari, and Armaghan Fakhraeirad, addressing the methodological and ethical challenges of conducting ethnomusicological research on Iran under conditions of crisis.
